29th FEBRUARY - LEAP YEAR DAY!!!!

LEAP YEAR only comes around once every 4 years and consists of 366 days , as opposed to a common year which has 365 ones.

In the GREGORIAN CALENDAR a LEAP DAY , February 29th , was first added 2000 years ago.

People born on February 29th are all invited to join  The Honor Society of Leap Year Day Babies.

ILIAS LALAOUNIS - JEWELLERY MUSEUM

Ilias Lalaounis was born in the heart of Athens in 1920 and he has been an internationally renowned artist and jeweller. He has received a lot of prizes for his creativity in art, the most important of which is that he has been the only jeweller ever elected as a member of the French Academy of Fine Arts.

His career began in the 40's when he was in charge of  Zolotas firm. It was in the 50's when his ingenious idea to revive Greek jewellery changed his life and career. His knoweledge and grasp of the art and history of early civilizations led to the creation of a great number of 'archaeological collections' based on the cultures of Europe, Asia and America. In the 70's he proved to be able to search for new ideas and create some spectacular designs based on modern technology, astronomy, nature and medicine.

In 1993 the workshops were moved to new facilities, so the old building in Karyatidon and Kallisperi street, on the south side of the Acropolis, houses today a unique Jewellery Museum. Its collection includes over 4000 pieces of jewellery and micro-sculptures designed by the founder of the Museum himself between 1940 and 2000.The 50 collections displayed have been organised in six sections on the first floor under the following main categories:'The Golden Dawn of the Art' , The History of Ancient Greek Art' , 'Jewellery inspired from other Civilizations' , 'Collections inspired from Nature' , 'Collections inspired from Space, Biology and Modern Technology' , 'Special Commissions and Private Collections'. On the second floor the visitor can enjoy looking at the micro-sculptures and the impressive decorative art objects.

Ilias Lalaounis Jewellery Museum is unique because it is the one and only museum of contemporary jewellery all over the world. It is definitely worth a visit!

AGATHA CHRISTIE - The Queen of crime

Agatha  Cristie  ,  crime  writer
Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller was born in 1890 in Torquay , England. She was first and foremost a story teller. She wrote 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections. She also wrote romances under the pen name Mary Westmacott  which remained a secret for 20 years. It is widely acknowledged that she is without compare mainly because of her killing methods - from poison and knives to guns , drowning and strangulation - .Two of the greatest detectives in literature were "born" in her books. Miss Jane Marple is a spinster with a mind like a steel trap and Hercule Poirot , a brainy little man who always likes things square instead of round.Agatha Christie's stage play "The Mousetrap"  holds the record for the longest initial run: it opened at the Ambassadors Theatre in London on 25 November 1952 and it is still running after more than 24000 performances.

ENGLISH - JELLYFISH

A JELLYFISH WITH ITS TOXIC TENTACLES
Jellyfish    pulse gently as they drift through the sea , feared by swimmers , loathed by fishermen and reppelent to most who encounter them.Scientists have discovered that these gelatinous animals , in their own habitat , are among the most numerous and in some ways ingenious and beautiful predators in Earth.

Without eyes (in most species ) , ears or even a brain , jellyfish manage to affect everything that lives in the ocean. They have the conventional bell-like shape and they simply wait everywhere with their dangling , toxic ,  stinging tentacles. These creatures can rapily increase in size when food is plentiful. When food becomes scarce , a jellyfish can shrink down again and travel light. They are fed on planktonic plants and animals. In a world with few hiding places , being transparent is a jelly's best defence. They are the major food source for salmon and butterfish , and they are easy to eat since they don't swim fast. A lot of them end up being eaten by sea anemones or pecked by birds.

Praya , as thick as your wrist , has been measured to be the longest jellyfish on Earth , longer than a blue whale  (thank God it's living 800 feet deep!!! ).Nowadays some people buy jellyfish Beanie Babies and keep them as pets.
